The Sustainable Food Systems experts are an integral part of UF/IFAS Research to improve the quality of life in Florida and throughout world.


ABOUT ISFS

Food is the indispensable cornerstone of human well-being. Food provides energy, water and nutrients to sustain life, promote health and build functional societies. The Global Food System is a dynamic and complex web of diverse cultures and values, international trade, markets, public and private institutions, farmers, ranchers and fishers, technology, genetic resources, environmental and bio-physical interactions

Characteristics of Sustainable Food Systems:

  • Safe and nutritious food is produced, processed and distributed fairly and efficiently
  • People have access to food and are healthy.
  • Environment and natural resources are conserved.
  • Businesses are profitable and individuals have economic opportunity
  • Communities are resilient to economic, political and environmental changes

Vision for the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems:

  • To be at the forefront of training the next generation of professionals to lead in the creation of a more sustainable global food system,
  • To develop the new transdisciplinary models for better global food system understanding, and
  • To inform consumers, producers, marketers, distributors, traders and other public and private decision makers.

Actions for the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems:

To 1) Conduct research on real-world issues; 2) Develop new teaching approaches and curricula; and 3) Communicate information to consumers, decision-makers in private and public sectors in the following priority areas:

  • Food systems role in health, nutrition and consumer behavior
  • Food system governance and systemic change
  • Risk, resilience and innovation in the global food system
  • Cross-cutting areas: Systems modeling, new metrics
